Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of IT lifecycle management solutions that reduce the total cost of owning IT resources, today announced Altiris IT lifecycle management solutions are now Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) compatible as determined by Pink Elephant’s PinkVerify™ process. Altiris integrated help desk, configuration and asset management solutions combine to provide a unique management architecture that not only manages ITIL-based service delivery and support but also automates the execution of service tasks.

The PinkVerify™ process indicates that each Altiris IT lifecycle management solution has been verified ITIL compatible, making Altiris the latest of only a select few companies to meet the criteria. Altiris solutions are PinkVerify™ service support enhanced for the following processes: incident, problem, change, release, availability and configuration management.

“Altiris management solutions automate ITIL best practices to a level not previously seen,” said Poul Nielsen, Altiris VP of marketing and product strategy. “Altiris help desk, asset and configuration management solutions have raised the bar by integrating tools that not only support ITIL processes, but extend the service model through automation. Altiris customers have the power to automatically resolve incidents and problems using context aware tools launched directly from a service desk ticket. While managing problems and incidents, real-world service desks also require the means to expedite problem resolution for cost effective service.”

Altiris IT lifecycle management solutions support ITIL service delivery and service support through a process-based implementation built on a single integrated architecture, role-based user console and a centralized configuration management database (CMDB). Altiris solutions, which provide incident, problem, change and service level management, offer an efficient model for consolidated service management that is key to ITIL compatibility.

The single CMDB is central to all Altiris management solutions, creating a logical model of discoverable and non-discoverable assets through automated discovery, continuous verification and status accounting. The CMDB also manages software versions within a definitive software library to ensure accurate software release management. Altiris further supports release management through integrated software packaging, preflight testing and targeted software distribution.

Altiris configuration management solutions differentiate the Altiris offering from the rest of the market by helping customers execute problem resolution tasks using embedded service desk tools for software delivery, imaging, OS migration, PC backup and recovery, patch management and remote control.

According to Gartner research, “Life cycle management of IT assets recognizes the costs and service issues associated with each phase of an asset's life. Each phase offers opportunities to improve service and reduce the total cost of ownership. Adopting a life cycle approach optimizes the investment in IT assets by applying a proven set of "best practices" to asset management decisions.” *

ITIL provides guidance for service desk operations with a goal to provide an efficient channel of communication between the business and the IT organization. Originally initiated to improve IT service management for the United Kingdom central government, ITIL has become relevant to all organizations as the most widely accepted and proven IT service management framework available today. Adopting ITIL best practices can provide benefits such as:

    • Increased customer satisfaction with IT services
    • Reduced risk of not meeting business requirements for IT services
    • Reduced costs when developing procedures and practices within an organization
    • Better communication and information flows between IT staff and customers
    • Greater productivity and better use of tools, skills and experience

David Ratcliffe, President and CEO of Pink Elephant, said, “Too often, IT organizations experience difficulty delivering service and look to technology as a silver bullet. ITIL helps organizations understand that the sophistication, complexity and integration of tools should instead be defined by IT processes. More IT organizations are looking to ITIL to provide a model for determining tool selection criteria. Aligning ITIL processes with tool selection helps ensure tools are configured and used appropriately and efficiency.”

Pink Elephant is a leader in IT management best practices, including ITIL. Pink Elephant's PinkVerify™ certification is recognized as the industry standard program for identifying ITIL compatibility. ITIL compatible and certified solutions are important to organizations that wish to align their IT practices with their business objectives and deliver effective IT service management.
