Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of IT lifecycle management solutions that reduce the total cost of owning IT resources, today announced that Altiris® AuditExpress™ has been selected by The American College to detect security vulnerabilities in system settings, patch and antivirus status and unauthorized software and hardware installations.
“Altiris just worked,” said Erich Lobecker, The American College network engineer. “I had tested other software solutions, and they simply didn’t work on all of our machines.”
The American College provides financial services distance education and has relied upon secure and up-to-date technology to maximize student learning and support for more than 75 years. With audits pending, The American College knew it was time to more proactively manage its IT assets. Lobecker’s team of three struggled to maintain an accurate assessment of the security posture of a wide range of hardware platforms and hundreds of workstations.
Before implementing AuditExpress, any assessments were done manually, Lobecker reports. He admits, “We didn’t have time to accurately and consistently track our patch status or to carefully monitor software and hardware use.”
In addition to being shorthanded, Lobecker encountered several problems with his antivirus program reporting incorrectly. “I pulled a report through our antivirus software that showed we were 98 percent current,” he said. “But after a manual inventory, we found that most of our computers lacked essential updates. Altiris will be able to help us by generating essential, accurate reports we need to help ensure system stability and security.”
Beyond patch and antivirus status, The American College IT staff also plans to use AuditExpress to monitor unauthorized software use and to alleviate auditing pressures through the built-in reports. “My boss had to manually check all of our workstations to help ensure Microsoft compliance,” Lobecker recalled. “All of us are looking forward to utilizing AuditExpress.”
Keith Saltstein, owner and account executive of NetX Inc., an Altiris Platinum Partner, said, “AuditExpress is kind of deceiving because it is such an excellent value while still being very robust and easy-to-use.” Saltstein has seen significant demand for AuditExpress. NetX, headquartered in Trenton, New Jersey, provides high-quality computing solutions, professional services and training to a vast array of businesses, government agencies, and organizations, including The American College.
