Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of service-oriented management solutions, today announced the opening of Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution™ (SVS™) for development. The release of the SVS API, included within a new software development kit, and the release of Trinket to the open source community via SourceForge.net will help IT organizations leverage the flexibility of SVS and further optimize application management. These initiatives will help Altiris drive its objective to establish SVS as the most widely used software virtualization technology in the world.

SVS is quickly gaining popularity by providing faster, simpler and more manageable deployment of PC applications. SVS helps to reduce support costs and streamline software operations. Trinket, developed and contributed to the development community by LordJeb Software, provides SVS end users with a basic management tool for their virtualized applications. Trinket includes functionality like application reset, activation, deactivation and delete through an easy-to-use interface available from an icon in the PC system tray.

The SVS SDK has been made freely available by Altiris to developers and programmers and provides the same APIs used by the Altiris SVS development team and LordJeb Software. The SVS SDK also contains C header files, a lib file, documentation and sample code.

Dwain Kinghorn, Altiris CTO, said, “We’ve seen an explosion of unique uses and applications for Altiris Software Virtualization Solution technology. To encourage innovation we have given the IT and developer communities the tools and code they need to create the next killer software virtualization application. Altiris open, standards-based technology allows us to provide this type of flexibility to the user community. The Trinket open source project is a good example of what is possible using the Altiris SVS SDK.”

LordJeb Software recently posted Trinket to SourceForge.net, the world's largest online, open-source software development community. SourceForge.net will help promote community contributions to the Trinket project. Developers can add code and new ideas to the project by simply downloading Trinket code from http://sourceforge.net/projects/trinket.

    Licensing and availability
To access the SVS SDK, please visit the Altiris Developer Portal http://www.altiris.com/portal/dev and register with Altiris. Access is generally approved within 24 hours. Persons who have already registered for access to the Altiris ASDK will be able to access the SVS SDK without the need for a second registration. The SVS SDK license enables an entity to develop applications and to use such applications solely within the organization where it was developed. The license restricts external distribution of a new application created using the SVS SDK unless the application is submitted to the Altiris Juice Web community at http://juice.altiris.com. The applicable end-user license terms and conditions are available with the SVS SDK download from the Altiris Developer Portal. Developers who want to develop an SVS-based application for commercial purposes should contact Altiris.

Trinket is offered under a BSD-style license allowing redistribution of derivative works under the license of the developer’s choice. Developers are not required to publish or make available the source code of their derivative works.
